Should you jump on the AI bandwagon?
The best time to jump on the Artificial Intellignece bandwagon was 10 years ago, the second best time is now.
I remember during my final year of school back in 2016, I had to choose five peripheral options for my Software Engineering and statistics degree, and one of the topics I chose was Artificial Intelligence, during which I was introduced to the field using a language called Prolog. Even though I passed the class, I wouldn’t be able to recall what it was about, partly because the state of AI at that time wasn’t as exciting as it is today, and also because I just wanted to complete my engineering degree with minimal effort, since I had to jugle programming, mathematics, project management as well as language courses all at once.
A couple of years later, Chatbots emerged as the potential next big thing, so I ordered an expensive O’Reilly book titled ‘Natural language processing with Python’, and after going through the first few chapters, I left it on my desk to collect dust.
If I could turn back time, I would have paid more attention in that class, and use the information I got to dive deeper into the subject. I would have also gone through the NLP book cover to cover and use that knowledge to create useful tools. But it’s not too late to learn, the field of AI is still relatively new, and this time I’ve decided not to miss the opportunity.
Back in 2018, the global AI market was valued at $7.35 billion, and it was projected to reach $89.84 billion by 2025. Today, the AI market is estimated to be worth over $300 billion and is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years. This means that there are plenty of opportunities to embark on an AI journey.
Success in one’s career often comes down to riding the right waves, and AI has all the signs of a game-changing wave, are you ready to ride it ?
